The term "festival studies" has been attached to the academic discourse dealing with the description of film and film-related worlds for several years now, and the perspective of a film festival as a place for the distribution and dissemination of films, as well as the exchange of ideas and meetings of people involved in the production, production and consumption of screen stories, has broadened by many perspectives. In recent years, many academic dissertations have been devoted to the political, social, economic, cultural and historical aspects of the functioning of film festivals, and "festival studies" have become a separate area of public discourse. The upcoming 50th edition of the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia (22-27.09.2025) is a good reason to take a broad look at the most important festival of Polish feature cinema and reflect on the half-century of the event's presence in the space of Polish cultural life. So far, there has not been a comprehensive scientific monograph describing the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, so we come up with the idea of conducting a research reconnaissance, which in the future could be a starting point for creating a broad description in the field of "festival studies". We suggest that the articles focus on the following problems and research areas, at the same time we are open to other perspectives on the phenomenon of the Polish Film Festival:

  • The PFF in the political aspect - how has national politics influenced and continues to influence the festival?
  • The place of the Polish Film Festival on the map of world festivals;
  • the PFF as a national cinema festival;
  • The broadly understood history of the Polish Film Festival;
  • The role of the PFF in building the canon of the history of Polish cinema;
  • Visual identity of the PFF – history and aesthetics;
  • Independent Cinema at the PFF;
  • Thematic sections of the PFF in the past and today;
  • The role of the artistic director in the past and today;
  • Controversies related to the PFF;
  • Festival audience;
  • Media image of the Polish Film Festival;
  • Film Chronicle of the Polish Film Festival;
  • The impact of the festival on the local community;
  • The Impact of the Festival on the Image of Gdynia and Pomerania;
  • Festival jurors;
  • The opinion-forming role of the PFF;
  • Winners of the Polish Film Festival;
  • Distribution and circulation of festival films;
  • Film education as part of the PFF;
  • The image of the PFF in the press and foreign media
