Abstrakt

The oeuvre of the goldsmiths active in Elbląg has been destroyed or substantially dispersed due to WWII. This is why it is extremely important to gather the information about these antiquities, which are preserved both in public and museum collections. In the early modern period, a few goldsmiths distinguished themselves. Undeniably we can include here three masters named Tolckemit, coming from the family who rendered great services to the town. The first from the mentioned trio to start his work was Alexander Tolckemit, (b. 1640, d. 1682), then came Sigismund Tolckemit I (b. 1662, d. ca 1730), and finally, Sigismund Tolckmeit II (b. 1697, d. after 1775). The first two goldsmiths were adept craftsmen, but it is currently difficult to judge their whole artistic output. Only 8 items created in their workshops are known to exist. As for Sigismund Tolckemit lis workshop, it is possible to identify about 50 both sacred and secular pieces which have only been partially preserved. Apparently, he must have been one of the most active and most important goldsmiths in Elbląg.
