Osoby z długotrwałą niepełnosprawnością obarczone są wysokim ryzykiem doświadczania wtórnych komplikacji zdrowotnych, które istotnie ograniczają uczestnictwo w życiu społecznym. Istnieje zatem potrzeba pogłębienia wiedzy na temat ich charakteru i konsekwencji występowania w tej grupie. Celem artykułu jest zatem zrozumienie i pogłębienie wiedzy na temat wtórnych komplikacji zdrowotnych umieszczonych w szerszym kontekście zjawiska niepełnosprawności. W pierwszej części artkułu została podjęta próba ustalenia terminologicznego komplikacji zdrowotnych. W drugiej części scharakteryzowano znaczącą rolę wtórnych komplikacji zdrowotnych jako predyktora nasilających się ograniczeń funkcjonalnych w badaniach osób z niepełnosprawnością oraz przyszłe plany badawcze.
