Culture specific phrases and translatability: Contextualisation of phraseology, illustrated by the example of Günter Grass

Abstract

To what extent can phraseological units challange the translator? Do other lexical units challenge the translator in the same way? How can modifications of set phrases be translated into another languages? The article analyses some examples extracted from a literary text which is well –known for its phraseo -stylistic creativity: the novel Ein weites Feld of Günter Grass. Close attention will be paid to the culture -specific background of the source text, the possible equivalence as well as further equivalence solutions in target languages like French and Italian.
