Analiza dostępnych badań i obserwacji klinicznych prowadzi do rozważań, jakim wyzwaniem dla adolescentów ze spektrum zaburzeń autystycznych jest satysfakcjonujące funkcjonowanie w sferze seksualnej. W tym badaniu porównano dane związane z życiowym doświadczeniem seksualnym w grupie nastolatków z ASD (n = 9), w wieku 16–19 lat, z kontrolną grupą chłopców w populacji ogólnej (n=20). Większość chłopców z ASD i grupy kontrolnej zgłosiła masturbację. Odsetek chłopców z ASD, którzy nie mieli doświadczeń seksualnych z partnerką, był większy niż w grupie kontrolnej. Tę różnicę tłumaczy się przede wszystkim znacznie mniejszą liczbą chłopców z ASD w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną, którzy zgłosili doświadczenie całowania się z dziewczynami i pieszczoty; nie pojawiły się żadne istotne różnice dotyczące bardziej intymnych doświadczeń seksualnych z partnerami. Wyniki sugerują istnienie podgrupy chłopców, którzy jeszcze nie weszli w sferę partnerskich doświadczeń seksualnych – wniosek zgodny z dostępnymi badaniami wśród prób dorosłych. Postawiona hipoteza trajektorii rozwoju seksualnego jest tematem do dalszych badań, jednakże doświadczenie seksualne w tej próbie oraz założone różnice rozwojowe wskazują na potrzebę edukacji i komunikacji związanej z seksualnością.
