Nabycie niepełnosprawności wzroku w wieku senioralnym wywołuje szereg negatywnych następstw w sferze fizycznej, psychicznej i społecznej, prowadząc do obniżenia poziomu jakości życia. Liczne badania wykazały wyższy wskaźnik śmiertelności wśród seniorów tracących wzrok. W eksploracjach dotyczących różnych populacji pacjentów dowiedziono, że niepełnosprawność wzroku zwiększa ryzyko zgonu, zarówno bezpośrednio, jak i w sposób pośredni, poprzez niekorzystny wpływ na wskaźniki dotyczące stanu zdrowia fizycznego i samopoczucia psychicznego. Mechanizmy leżące u podstaw tego zjawiska nie zostały w pełni rozpoznane i ze względu na duże znaczenie społeczne problemu wymagają dalszych analiz badawczych.
