The text is a brief introduction to the series of articles To Be Human in Different Ages and Cultures. While discussing, inter alia, the Norbert Elias and Leszek Kołakowski works, the authors focus mainly on the changes in the Western mentality and consider such categories as: the process of civilization, identity (including views – also stereotypical, ideas and myths) or human-society relations. The study of how different cultures work out the principles of ‘becoming more human’ is an extremely important issue for the development philosophical and anthropological, as well as psychological reflection on man.
