The article compares views of famous linguists of the 20th century, distinguished by originality of judgments on the linguistic system and norms. The aesthetic function of language has always attracted attention of linguists from different eras, and the continuity of language development has been considered by each linguist in their own way according to the current trends in the humanities. In this paper the ideas of three outstanding linguists K. Vossler, E. Coseriu and R. Budagov represent the multivariate vision of language in the constantly changing paradigms and in the dynamics of linguistic transformations. However, their various beliefs only strengthen the status of the language norm, which reflects the peculiarities of the language of a particular period of time. Despite fundamentally different approaches to understanding the essence of language and the role of the norm in language development, intersection points in the views of these eminent researchers are of the most interest.
