The Transformation of the Functions and Identity of the Ervin Szabó Metropolitan Library – Between Scholarly Tradition and a Contemporary Cultural-Educational Mission

Abstract

This article presents the history, architecture, collections, and contemporary operation of the Ervin Szabó Metropolitan Library in Budapest—one of the most important library institutions in Hungary. The study is based on an analysis of written sources, supplemented by the authors’ own observations and interviews conducted with library staff. The text discusses the development of the institution from its founding in 1904 to the present day, with particular emphasis on the activities and significance of its patron, Ervin Szabó, an outstanding figure in Hungarian librarianship and sociology. The architectural merits of the neo-Baroque Wenckheim Palace, which houses the library, are also presented, and the most valuable parts of the collections are characterized, including the Budapest Collection and the Music Collection. Furthermore, the article analyzes the scope of modern library services, the development of digital resources, educational and cultural activities, and the role of the library as an important socio-cultural center of the capital. The Ervin Szabó Metropolitan Library emerges as a model example of combining historical heritage with modern library solutions, playing a key role in promoting knowledge and culture among the residents of Budapest.
