The subject matter and the aim of this paper is to conduct a comparative analysis of the selected components of Franz Kafka’s and Nikolai Gogol’s narrative systems and indicate their various similarities. The conceptual apparatus of contemporary narratology is used in the the study. Determining focalization, diegetic levels, narrational modes, and localizing “filters” and “reflectors” within the framework of diegesis, the author demonstrates how Gogol and Kafka create their narrators, simultaneously evoking the feeling of the absurd and enforcing interpretation.
